My project Earth Works highlights the vital yet often overlooked importance of soil. While essential for our wellbeing and climate stability, soil is currently facing a serious health crisis.
I have sculpted vessel shapes made from soil itself. In traditional still life, expensive vases and exotic flowers often symbolised wealth and status. In Earth Works, soil becomes the centrepiece, drawing attention to something so precious and essential to life. Exposed roots wrap around the vessels, revealing the hidden underground networks that store carbon and sustain life.
The work also includes degraded soil and lifeless plants to reflect the fragile balance between human activity and nature. Earth Works asks us to look more closely at the ground beneath our feet and recognise soil as a living force that supports all life and therefor its plight must be brought to our attention and protected.
